Grade 000

In Grade 000 a loving and caring environment is created so that learners feel at home and optimal learning can take place. The Grade 000 learners, young as they are, follow a structured programme every day.

Each classroom has a fulltime assistant to help in giving the learners support throughout the day. In the mornings learners enjoy some free play until the official school day starts. Play allows one of the best opportunities to explore and learn. An interesting sensory tray is put out to play with during free play.

At 08h00 the official school day starts with Morning Ring. This is the time when the theme for the week is discussed. Learners are encouraged to share their knowledge and thoughts during these discussions. The learners enjoy learning songs and poems related to the theme. Learners are taught about concepts such as the seasons, days of the week, the months of the year and counting. We also use Letterland and its interesting characters as a fun way to teach the alphabet.

Then it’s time for creative activities; colouring in with various mediums, painting with various mediums, and cutting, tearing, pasting and 3D construction. A large variety of activities are used to build on all the different areas of the learner’s development. Fine motor activities are presented every day as these are instrumental in the learner’s muscle development.

At snack time the learners are served a snack consisting of various sandwiches, fruit and water before play time. We ensure sun-screen is applied to the learners before they go out to play and they wear their brown Montrose hat. Learners are free to play on the climbing equipment, with balls, hula-hoops, in the sand pit, water tray, fantasy area, swings and much more.

After playtime there is a language ring where the learners learn about the different letters and their sounds. The learners engage in activities such as puzzle building, threading, playing with construction toys and number games.

We end off the school day with a story related to the theme. During and after the story we engage with the learners about the story’s content. The day ends at 12h00.

Grade 00

Grade 00 learners follow a structured programme which, also, still offers lots of opportunities for free play. The aim is to expose the learners to a variety of activities, each one designed to optimise their learning experiences.

In the morning learners engage in free play until the official school day starts. Free play is important for all learners as they still learn many things through play. It also offers an opportunity to work on social skills. Daily a sensory tray with interesting things is put out for everyone to explore.

The day starts at 08h00 with a Morning Ring in which the theme for the week is discussed. We talk about weather, the seasons, days of the week and the months of the year during this time. Learners are encouraged to share their knowledge and thoughts during these discussions.

Every Monday learners are given the opportunity to share their weekend news with the class. Every Friday learners are given the opportunity to bring ‘Show and Tell’. Learners are encouraged to bring something related to the theme to share with the class. These activities help build the learner’s self-confidence in speaking in front of people and in sharing their own ideas.

Creative activities are explored by learners; colouring in and painting with various mediums, cutting, tearing, pasting and 3D construction. We include a large variety of activities to build on all the different areas of the learner’s development. We also include many pre-writing activities as well as an introduction to writing.

During play time learners are free to play with what they choose; climbing equipment, balls, hula-hoops, sand pit, water tray, fantasy equipment, swings and many other activities on offer.

After play time we have another ring which is either, a language or a mathematics ring. We teach the different letters and their sounds. We also teach mathematical concepts using concrete objects, as learners learn best through experience. Then we do activities such as puzzle building, threading, patterns and number games.

School ends at 12h30 with a story related to the theme. During and after the story we make sure we engage with the learners about the story’s content.

Grade R

In our Grade R classes we encourage independence and responsibility for each child from day one. Our ethos is Love and we create a warm, friendly and ordered learning environment with a fresh, inclusive approach to discipline. Each class has a qualified, experienced and passionate educator who is assisted by a full time class assistant. Montrose Pre-Primary School offers an exciting and stimulating Grade R programme. Our CAPS inspired curriculum offers a full range of activities during the day.

We use a child-friendly approach to reading called Letterland. This unique phonetics based programme motivates learners and fosters a love of reading at a young age.

Also included in the programme are i-pads. Parents form an integrated part of our school. Parents and educators work together to help each child to reach their potential
